Some aesthetic treatments prepare the skin for the sun, while others are not recommended and should be avoided when the skin is tanned or before sun exposure precisely because they make the skin photosensitive.

Aesthetic touch-ups in summer: which ones to do

Biorevitalization. Also called biostimulation, is the aesthetic treatment that gives a boost to the skin’s defenses and makes it stronger to defend itself against damage caused by sun exposure. Substances are injected through a very fine needle. This procedure prevents the damage of aging and give plumpness, firmness, and hydration to the skin. These substances are hyaluronic acid, amino acids, vitamins, polynucleotides, and antioxidants..

The filler. Retouching with hyaluronic acid can be done in the summer, with the precaution of always applying high factor sunscreen before exposure and waiting at least 48 hours following the treatment. The contraindication is there might be high temperatures that might promote edema. Fillers with low crosslinking and therefore injected at a more superficial level might have a shorter duration.

Botulinum toxin. Even for botulinum toxin, there are no particular indications other than to apply SPF and wait for one to two days before sunbathing. Indeed, botulinum toxin has an anti-aging effect against the sun and helps prevent UV-induced wrinkling. In fact, by inhibiting the contraction of the muscles in the forehead and around the eyes, it makes the tan more even and without white marks that often form in the very wrinkles caused by very pronounced facial expressions.

The cosmetic touch-ups not to do in summer

Exfoliation. Chemical exfoliation is not recommended during the summer because it makes the skin photosensitive. Therefore, it is better to postpone the treatment until autumn, when the skin shows signs of sun exposure. In fact, after the summer, the skin appears thicker, rougher, duller and may have sun spots: peeling smooths and renews the skin.

Laser. Both ablative and fractional lasers are to be absolutely avoided because they can cause the formation of spots, and sensitize the skin. The latest generation of lasers used for hair removal can modulate the frequency according to the phototype and therefore, can be done even on dark skin. In general, it is best to avoid doing this treatment in the summer and postpone it until the fall.

Pulsed light. The same rule as for laser applies; it is best to avoid doing it in the summer months when you are constantly exposed to the sun.

In order to avoid making a mistake or stimulating reactions with side effects, it is best, therefore, to avoid all those cosmetic touch-ups that produce skin exfoliation and aim at tissue regeneration. During the summer, it is best to focus on treatments that provide the skin with hydration and antioxidant protection so that it is less vulnerable to external aggressions. And the tanning will also be less harmful.
