Hyaluronic acid: here’s why we find it in cosmetics

You’ve probably heard of Hyaluronic Acid many times. It’s the beauty secret of the new millennium, the elixir of eternal youth that’s driving cosmetic surgeons and brands crazy. But how many of you really know what Hyaluronic Acid is and how it’s used in beauty treatments?

We can start by saying that it’s a substance naturally present in human connective tissue, helping to ensure hydration, as well as resistance and shape retention. It can actually encourage the production of collagen, and consequently protect tissues. We can imagine its action as forming a kind of film which prevents the dispersion of water. In this way, hydration of the skin is guaranteed and the cutaneous tissue is protected. As with other components of our tissues, the concentration of hyaluronic acid tends to decrease with age, and wrinkles and unsightly blemishes appear.

For this reason, many beauty treatments are based on the extraordinary properties of this acid, and particularly its ability to bind water molecules and other substances that are essential for our body. And ultimately, all this makes it very useful for maintaining skin health.

Hyaluronic Acid: how many types there are?

However, not all products and treatments based on Hyaluronic Acid are equal: in fact it’s important to distinguish between products that use high molecular weight Hyaluronic Acid and those with low molecular weight. In the first case, this substance captures water from the body and then releases it; while in the second case, the water is retained. The reason for this is very simple: the difference lies in the size of the molecules present in the acid. In the acid with low molecular weight, they are smaller and can therefore penetrate the deep layer of the skin more easily. In the second case, however, the molecules are larger, and therefore act only on the surface.

This means that the action of low molecular weight Hyaluronic Acid will be deep and lasting hydration, as well as plumping and filling of the tissues.

High molecular weight hyaluronic acid, on the other hand, provides a hydration which is superficial but no less important, since it binds to the so-called stratum corneum of the skin, creating a protective effect, thanks to its intense film-forming action.
